Today, Monatano’s team gave some more info into why Nicco Montano could not fight on this card. They say that she was pulled from the fight over her kidney function. Here is the statement they released.
“She will be fine in a few days. The UFC medical team was called in to evaluate her this morning during the process of her weight cut. They determined that she had to cease cutting weight and be transported to and treated at the local hospital for issues regarding her kidney function”
Valtentin Shevchenko responded using social media.
“I told it before, she can pull out from the fight at anytime,” Shevchenko (15-3 MMA, 4-2 UFC) wrote in a statement released via Instagram after her bout’s cancelation. “She was trying to avoid this fight several times already. It is my (third) preparation for this fight.
“Looks like it was her plan from the beginning, to show up for the fight week, to build up her name, speak confident and secure, and then escape from the fight in the last minutes.”
No word on on her time table to return, no word on if Valentina will be paid any of her purse. Usually if Dana can’t find a replacement fight he will give the fighter their show money. For example, Brian Ortega was offered a replacement fight, he turned them down, so Dana paid him nothing for that fight camp.
UPDATE – Nicco Montano has been stripped of her championship title. Valentina Shevhenko wil fight for Vacant title later this year, opponent to be annoucned later.
UFC President Dana White today told TSN that the flyweight championship is now vacant, and No. 1 contender Valentina Shevchenko (15-3 MMA, 4-2 UFC) will fight an opponent later this year to determine the new titleholder.
“The belt becomes vacated, so the title is vacated,” White later said during the UFC 228 weigh-in show on FS1. “Obviously, Shevchenko is dying to fight for this title. So we’re in the process right now of trying to make another fight before the end of the year.”
